Tartaric Acid

Tartaric acid, colorless crystal or white crystalline powder, odorless, sour taste, relatively stable in the air. Tartaric acid is an important retarding agent in building materials gypsum, it can also be used as cement retarding agent, especially used as self-leveling mortar retarding agent.

Tartaric acid is often used in medicine, mordant and tanning agents, and is also commonly used as a reagent for separating racemic basic compounds. Several of its salts have important applications, such as the preparation of Fehling's reagent with potassium sodium tartrate in the laboratory for the identification of aldehyde functional groups in the structure of organic molecules. Its potassium sodium salt is also called Rochelle salt, and its crystal is polarized under pressure to produce a potential difference on the surface of the two ends (piezoelectric effect), which can be made into piezoelectric components for radio and cable radio receivers and pickups.
