The color will darken after long-term exposure to air. Diethyltoluenediamine is flammable and highly corrosive. Contact with skin and eyes can cause irritation and severe burns. It is harmful if taken by mistake. Specific toxicity data is lacking. Its toxicity can be referred to that of toluenediamine.

Diethyltoluenediamine is used as a chain extender for reaction injection molding polyurethane, and a curing agent for polyurethane coatings, epoxy resins, and alkyd resins. It is an intermediate for pesticides and dyes, and an antioxidant for plastics, rubbers, and oils.
