Petroleum ethers is a colorless transparent liquid, with the smell of kerosenes. It's mainly a mixture of pentanes and hexanes. Insoluble in water, soluble in anhydrous ethanol, benzene, chloroforms, oil and other organic solvents. Flammable and explosive, can react strongly with oxidizing agents. Mainly used as solvent and grease treatment. It is usually obtained from platinum reforming residual oil or straight run gasolines by fractionation, hydrogenation or other methods.
