Hematoxylin

Hematoxylin, a brown crystalline powder with the chemical formula C16H14O6, is used as a staining agent for nuclei and chromatin. Used for spectrophotometric determination of vanadium, aluminum, tin (IV), fluorine, niobium, tantalum, etc.

Hematoxylin and eosin are often used histologically, and unlike iodine solution, this is a permanent stain. Other commonly used dyes containing hematoxylin are phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin dyes, which are a mixture of phosphotungstic acid and hematoxylin. Hematoxylin stain is often used for tissue research. Alum and ferric salts are often used as mordants to display nuclear and cytoplasmic structures. The principle of these mordants is to form a mordant - dye - tissue complex, thereby displaying color. The salts used vary in color: while iron salts present a dark blue color precipitate, aluminum salts usually show a blue-white color. Aluminum and iron hematoxylin solutions are described below.
