Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the action of 5α-reductase, and DHT can promote the growth and development of the prostate. There are two subtypes of 5α-reductase, type I isoenzyme and type II isoenzyme, of which type I isoenzyme has reproductive activity and type II isoenzyme is involved in the conversion of testosterone in skin and liver.
