Tert-Butyl Hydroperoxide

Tert-butyl hydroperoxide is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H10O2. It is a colorless, transparent liquid. It is slightly soluble in water, but easily soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. The main uses of tert-butyl hydroperoxide include as a catalyst, bleaching powder and deodorant, cross-linking agent for unsaturated polyesters, polymerization initiator, rubber vulcanizer, etc. Its physical properties include a density of 0.937 g/cm³, a melting point of -2.8°C, a boiling point of 37°C (measured at 15 mm Hg), and a flash point of 26.7°C. Tert-butyl hydroperoxide is stable at 75°C, but its primary decomposition reaction can be accelerated in the presence of small amounts of copper, cobalt, and manganese salts. Because it is flammable and oxidizing, there is a risk of explosion, so violent shaking and open flames should be avoided, and it should be avoided from being placed together with reducing substances, strong acids, and strong bases.

Tert-butanol peroxide is an organic compound commonly abbreviated TBHP. It is primarily used as an oxidant and a free radical initiator.
Tert-butanol peroxide can be used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis and can oxidize alkenes to alcohols, ketones or aldehydes. It can also be used for other organic compounds such as oxidized amines, sulfides and selenides.
Tert-butanol peroxide can also be used as a free radical initiator in polymerization. It can trigger free radical polymerization reactions, such as polymerization of acrylates, crotonates and silicone monomers, so as to prepare various polymer materials.
Tert-butanol peroxide can also be used as a surface treatment agent, rubber additives and polymer crosslinking agents for industrial applications. In the biomedical field, it is also used as a biological reagent, such as a chemical reagent in biological deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequencing.
