Motherwort has the ability to act as a galactagogue, meaning it promotes a mother's milk flow.it also has been used as a uterine tonic before and after childbirth. the herb contains a chemical
called leonurine, which encourages uterine contractions. Motherwort is also claimed to be an emmenagogue, or an agent that promotes menstrual flow. it has been used for centuries to
regulate the menstrual cycle and to treat menopausal and menstrual complaints.

• One of the more famous traditional uses of motherwort is to help regulate irregular heart rates caused by anxiety and stress. Studies have shown it to have anti-arrhythmic effects which can help regulate heart rates and lower increased heart rates.

• A small trial using Motherwort oil showed significant improvements in blood pressure readings, heart rate, and ECG as well as an improvement in anxiety, sleep and headaches.

• Motherwort has a weak calcium channel blocker action, furthering its benefits in high blood pressure.

• It contains a specific chemical called leonurine which is an alkaloid with a wide range of biological activity including vasodilation, muscle relaxant, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, and anti-apoptosis. (cell death)

• An alkaloid called Stachydrine is found in Motherwort, which has been shown to protect endothelial function

• Motherwort is rich in bioactive flavonoids. Large observational studies have shown a link between a persons total flavonoid intake and their risk of heart disease. Higher flavonoid intakes lead to a reduced risk of heart disease.

Motherwort extract is the above-ground part of Leonurus heterophyllus Sweet, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It has the functions of promoting blood circulation, regulating menstruation, removing blood stasis and regenerating new life, diuresis and swelling, and clearing away heat and detoxification.

The whole plant contains Leonurine (Leonurine) about 0.05% (a trace amount at the beginning of the flower, and gradually increases during the flowering period), Stachydrine, Rutin, Fumaric acid (Fumaric acid), Leonurine, 4-Arginine, 4-Arginine, Arginine, Fragrant, Stigmasterol and Sitosterol. 5 kinds of crystalline substances: Leonurusine A, Leonurusine B and Leonurus A, B and C. The flowers contain leonuridine.
