Atraric Acid (evernyl or veramoss) is a naturally occurring phenolic compound and ester with the IUPAC name methyl 2,4-dihydroxy-3,6-dimethylbenzoate and molecular formula C10H12O4. It occurs in the root bark of Pygeum africanum and Evernia prunastri (Oakmoss). 

Used alongside natural oakmoss it is possible to create a very effective facsimile of a traditional Fougère using this material, though it isn't a full substitute for oakmoss on its own, this chemical is one of the key odor components of oakmoss absolute.

Oakmoss was used in perfumery for many years, very specifically in the chypre accord. However, due to its allergic potential is now banned from use in perfumery, and its widely replaced by the synthetic note called Evewrnyl \ veramoss. 

This molecule has become a key ingredient in the aromatic fougere as well. A category of scent mostly appreciated by men.

There is evidence to suggest that it has antiandrogenic activity in humans and its use in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia, prostate cancer, and spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy has been investigated.
