linezolid is a synthetic oxazolidinone antibiotic that was approved by the FDA in 2000 for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive (G+) bacteria. Linezolid is an inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis. Linezolid showed good antibacterial activity against methicillin-sensitive or drug-resistant staphylococcus, vancomycin-sensitive or drug-resistant enterococcus, penicillin-sensitive or drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, and also against anaerobic bacteria. Unlike other drugs, linezolid does not affect peptidyl transferase activity. Linezolid has a unique site and mode of action, so it is not easy to cross resistance with other antibacterial drugs that inhibit protein synthesis in positive bacteria with intrinsic or acquired resistance, and it is not easy to induce bacterial resistance in vitro.

As of 2014 bacterial resistance to linezolid has remained low.
