Propylene glycol is an organic compound with chemical formula C3H8O2. It is miscible with water, ethanol and many organic solvents. Normally, it is a colorless viscous liquid, almost tasteless and slightly sweet. Propylene glycol can be used as a raw material in unsaturated polyester resins and as a wetting agent with glycerin or sorbitol in cosmetics, toothpaste and soaps. It is used in hair colorants as a moisture-regulating and smoothing agent, as an antifreeze, as well as in cellophane, plasticizer and pharmaceutical industry.

Propylene glycol is a compound which is GRAS (generally recognized as safe) by the US Food and Drug Administration under 21 CFR x184.1666, and is also approved by the FDA for certain uses as an indirect food additive.
