Matrine is made from the dried roots, plants and fruits of Sophora flavescens Ait, a leguminous plant, extracted with organic solvents such as ethanol. It is an alkaloid, generally total alkaloids of Sophora flavescens, and its main components are matrine and sophora. There are various alkaloids such as fruitine, oxysophorine, and sophoridine, among which matrine and oxymatrine have the highest content.
Matrine, with the molecular formula C15H24N2O, is an alkaloid extracted from the dried roots, plants and fruits of the leguminous plant Sophora flavescens by ethanol and other organic solvents.
