Tetrahydrofuran (THF)

Tetrahydrofuran, also known as oxacyclopentane, 1, 4-epoxy butane, is a heterocyclic organic compound, chemical formula C4H8O, belongs to the ether class, is a complete hydrogenation product of furan, colorless transparent liquid, soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, etc., mainly used as solvent, chemical synthesis intermediate, analytical reagent.

Physical property

1. 1.Tetrahydrofuran is a colorless transparent liquid with low volatility and viscosity.

Chemical property

1. 1.Tetrahydrofuran is stable to air and water, but easily hydrolyzes under acidic conditions.
2. 2.Under strong alkaline conditions, tetrahydrofuran can be oxidized to tetrahydrofuran-1-oxide, which can be used as a higher-order ionic liquid component.

   THF is an important organic synthesis raw material and excellent solvent, especially suitable for dissolving PVC, polyvinylidene chloride and butaniline, widely used as a solvent for surface coatings, anti-corrosion coatings, printing ink, tape and film coatings, and as a reaction solvent, for electroplating aluminum liquid can be arbitrarily controlled aluminum layer thickness and brightness. THF itself can be polycondensation (cation-induced ring-opening repolymerization) into polytetramethylene ether diol (PTMEG), also known as tetrahydrofuran homopolyether. PTMEG and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) are made into special rubber with wear resistance, oil resistance, good low temperature performance and high strength. A block polyether polyester elastic material was prepared with dimethyl terephthalate and 1, 4-butanediol. PTMEG with the relative molecular weight of 2000 and p-methylene bis (4-phenyl) diisocyanate (MDI) are the raw materials for polyurethane elastic fibers (SPANDEX fiber), special rubber and some special purpose coatings. In organic synthesis, it is used to produce tetrahydrothiophene, 1.4-dichloroethane, 2.3-dichlorotetrahydrofuran, valerolactone, butyrolactone and pyrrolidone. In the pharmaceutical industry, THF is used in the synthesis of coughbexil, ribulimycin, progesterone and some hormone drugs. THF is treated with hydrogen sulfide to produce tetrahydrothiophenol, which can be used as odor agent (identification additive) in fuel gas. THF can also be used as a surface treatment agent for synthetic leather.
