Terephthalic acid is the organic compound with formula C6H4(COOH)2. This colourless solid is a commodity chemical, used principally as a precursor to the polyester PET, used to make clothing and plastic bottles. Several million tones are produced annually. It is one of three isomeric phthalic acids.

This includes two types: the first type is dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP), which is the product of esterification reaction between terephthalic acid and industrial octanol (2-ethylhexanol). It is a high-quality plasticizer with high flash point and high specific resistivity, especially suitable for the production of cable materials with high heat resistance and insulation requirements;
The second type is polyester plasticizer, which is the product of esterification and condensation reaction between terephthalic acid and polyols (such as diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, glycerol, propylene glycol, butanediol, etc.). Its molecular weight is generally between 1000-4000 (the relative molecular weight of polyester used as plasticizer is much smaller than that of polyester used in chemical fiber and plastic packaging).

  1. Terephthalic acid is consumed as precursors to polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
  2. Terephthalic acid is used in paint as a carrier.
  3. Terephthalic acid is used as a raw material to make terephthalate plasticizers .
  4. It is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material for certain drugs.
  5. PTA is an important raw material for lower molecular weight saturated polyesters for powder and water-soluble coatings.
  6. In the research laboratory, terephthalic acid has been popularized as a component for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks.
