The precipitated barium sulfate is white amorphous powder with relative density of 4.50 (15 ºC) and melting point of 1580 ºC. Due to its high refractive index (1.63-1.65), it shows white color and has certain covering power. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, but soluble in hot sulfuric acid. It is easy to make mixed crystal with potassium permanganate, calcium carbonate or metal nitrate. It can be reduced to barium sulfide with carbon at high temperature. It is an important basic chemical raw material.
