Melatonin is one of the hormones secreted by the pineal gland of the brain. Melatonin belongs to the indole heterocyclic compound, its chemical name is n-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, also known as pineal hormone, melatonin, melatonin.

After melatonin is synthesized and stored in the pineal body, sympathetic nerve excitation innervates pineal cells to release melatonin. Then, through the projection of postganglionic sympathetic neurons in the superior cervical ganglion, nerve fibers forming pyramidal nerves reach the pineal gland to regulate melatonin synthesis. The secretion of melatonin has an obvious circadian rhythm, which is suppressed during the day and active at night. Melatonin can inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, reduce the content of gonadotropin releasing hormone, gonadotropin, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone, and can directly act on the gonads to reduce the content of androgen, estrogen and progesterone. In addition, MT has strong neuroendocrine immunomodulatory activity and scavenging free radical antioxidant ability, and is eventually metabolized in the liver, and the damage of liver cells can affect the level of MT in the body.
