However, under the condition of an appropriate catalyst, the ester bonds can be hydrolyzed to produce compounds such as phenylacetic acid and ethanol. This compound can also undergo transesterification reactions with other alcohols to form different ester compounds. For instance, when reacting with methanol, methyl phenylacetylmalonate can be obtained. Through acid-catalyzed hydrolysis reaction, this compound can generate phenylacetylmalonic acid. Further addition of water can yield phenylacetic acid and diethyl malonate.

Diethyl phenylacetylmalonate has two highly hydrophobic ethyl acetate groups in its molecular structure, which endows it with a certain degree of hydrophobicity. This compound is not easily soluble in water but has good solubility in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene. Diethyl phenylacetylmalonate is an organic synthesis intermediate and is widely used in organic chemistry for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds.
