1,3-Butanediol

1.3-butanediol is an organic compound with the molecular formula C4H10O2, which is mainly used in the preparation of polyester resin, polyurethane resin, plasticizer, etc., and is also used as a humidifier and softener for textiles, paper and tobacco.

Property description: Colorless viscous liquid. Melting point < -54℃, boiling point 207°C at 760 mmHg, relative density 1.01 (20/4℃), viscosity (25℃) 103.9mPa·s, refractive index n20/D1.4385-1.4405(lit), surface tension (25℃) 37.8mN, m, flash point 121℃. Soluble in water, acetone, methyl ethyl (methyl) ketone, ethanol, dibutyl phthalate, castor oil, almost insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, ethanolamines, mineral oil, linseed oil. When hot, it can dissolve nylon, but also partially dissolve shellac and turpentine. Due to the high boiling point, it is easy to be oxidized by air when distillation under normal pressure, so it is advisable to distillation under reduced pressure. Odorless, slightly bittersweet. Strong hygroscopic, can absorb the equivalent of its own weight of 12.5 water (relative humidity is 50), and even 38.5 water (relative humidity is 80).

An unsaturated polyester made of 1, 3-butanediol or ethylene glycol mixed as a raw material for polyester resin and alkyd resin has good water resistance, softness and impact resistance. 2. Polyester plasticizer made from 1, 3-butanediol and dibasic acid (adipic acid), with low volatility, migration resistance, soapy water resistance, solvent resistance and oil resistance. 3. As the raw material of polyurethane coating as the raw material of saturated polyester for polyurethane coating, the obtained product can get good water resistance in the uncoated paint, and the effect is better than that of using other diols. 4. Used as wetting agent and softener, 1, 3-butanediol has excellent moisturizing properties and low toxicity. After being made into ester, it can be used as wetting and softener for cigarettes, celluloid, Vinylon film, paper and fiber. 5. Solvents used as fine chemicals can be used in the formulation of toners, creams, pastes and toothpastes. 1, 3-butanediol is also an intermediate in medicine and dyes.
