Paclitaxel is a highly efficient cytotoxic agent with a unique anti-cancer mechanism. It acts on microtubule proteins. Microtubules are a type of fibrin in eukaryotic cells that are closely related to cell mitosis. For rapidly dividing tumor cells, paclitaxel "freezes" the mitotic spindle, causing the tumor cells to stop in the G2 and M phases until death. The side chain of paclitaxel, as an important intermediate in the synthesis of paclitaxel, has significant value in its synthetic research.

The total synthesis of Taxol was successfully achieved by three laboratories in the United States through different routes, but due to the complex synthesis steps and high cost, it has no industrial application value. Later, it was discovered that 102 deacetylbaccatin III (102DAB) extracted from the leaves of Taxus chinensis could be used for semi synthesis, and paclitaxel could be obtained by introducing a chiral paclitaxel side chain f into the 102DAB molecule. Therefore, paclitaxel side chains are mainly used as pharmaceutical intermediates in the synthesis and preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
